Gettysburg College announced Thursday that the comprehensive fee for the 2010-2011 academic year will rise 4.9 percent from $48,050 to $50,880. Though the entire operating budget for the college is only rising 2.5 percent, to $110.8 million, President Janet Morgan Riggs justified the increase in tuition by pointing to underperforming aspects of the college’s funding portfolio.

Last weekend NATO and American forces launched the largest offensive since the initial invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. Some 4,000 American soldiers, buttressed by Afghan, British, Estonian, Danish, and Canadian forces, have launched the attack in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. The offensive is expected to last for weeks as the government attempts to reassert its authority in the south.

On Feb. 10, Gettysburg College cancelled all afternoon classes. The college was in the middle of a massive blizzard that dumped three feet of snow onto the campus. Despite the blizzard, Gettysburg students and staff braved the snow to save lives through the Bone Marrow Registry Drive.
